Calm the Storm

A Devotional from Pastor Faith
There are seasons in life when our hearts feel like the middle of a storm.
The waves of anxiety rise. Our thoughts begin to race. Our emotions feel unpredictable, and peace seems just out of reach.
Many people quietly walk through these storms every day. Some face anxiety, some battle depression, some struggle with emotional highs and lows that make stability feel impossible. And when you add the pressures of life, family, pregnancy, work, or past trauma, the storm can feel even stronger.
But there is something powerful we must remember as believers:
Jesus is not afraid of storms.
In the Gospel of Mark, the disciples found themselves in a violent storm while Jesus was in the boat with them.
Mark 4:39 tells us that Jesus stood up and spoke directly to the wind and the waves.
He simply said, “Silence! Be still!”
And immediately the storm stopped.
The same Jesus who calmed the storm on the sea is the same Jesus who can calm the storms in our minds and hearts today.
Sometimes the storm we are facing is not outside of us — it is inside of us.
It shows up as racing thoughts. Sleepless nights. Fear about the future. Feeling overwhelmed by emotions we can’t control.
If you are in that place today, hear this truth clearly:
Your storm does not scare God.
God does not walk away from us when our emotions feel messy or overwhelming. He does not abandon us when our thoughts feel chaotic. In fact, Scripture tells us that the Lord is especially close when our hearts are hurting.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted.
This means that in the middle of your storm, God is not distant. He is present.
Sometimes peace does not come all at once. Sometimes it comes in small steps.
A prayer whispered through tears. A deep breath when anxiety rises. A moment of worship when the mind feels heavy.
These small moments invite the presence of God into the storm.
Peace is not the absence of struggle.
Peace is the presence of Jesus in the middle of it.
At RAW Movement Ministries, we believe restoration is possible for every person. We believe God meets people in their most broken, raw moments and begins a healing work that transforms lives.
Your storm is not the end of your story.
The same God who calmed the sea can calm your heart.
Today, if you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to pause.
Breathe.
Pray.
And remind yourself that Jesus is still in the boat with you.
And when Jesus is in the boat…
the storm never has the final word.
Prayer
Lord, when my mind feels overwhelmed and my heart feels heavy, remind me that You are near. Speak peace into the storms within me and give me the strength to trust You one moment at a time. Calm my thoughts, steady my heart, and fill my life with Your presence. Amen.
